Deb Heatherly has not only designed some of my favorite Creative Grids® Tools, she also uses them to design stunning quilts! Cat’egorical is the perfect quilt to showcase the Creative Grids Kitty Cornered Tool. Don’t you love the way the block design is repeated on the border.
Quasar and Quasar Plus utilize those 45-degree angles that are printed on all of the Creative Grids® rectangles. Both are jelly roll friendly. Quasar finishes to 50″ square. Quasar Plus includes two different sizes – a table topper and a large throw.
The Creative Grids® CGR612 is suggested for construction and the CGR15 is great for squaring up the sections of the quilt.
The patterns are due to arrive early next month so place your orders now!
Deb posted this quilt on Facebook and I immediately fell in love. Even though there is the illusion of curves, they are actually cut and sewn using the Creative Grids® 2 Peaks in 1 (CGR2P1) tool. Combining blocks made with the Kitty Cornered Tool creates a stunning secondary pattern. The pattern includes fabric requirements for three different sizes from topper to queen.
Deb has had several hundred people make this quilt in her Grids Girl program. She sent me some pictures from those students:

Aleesa Kobi
Betsy McDonald
Cacia Orser
What would your student’s quilts look like? What a great class! The pattern is due to arrive this month so place your order now.
While it looks like these blocks are set on point, it is an illusion. Susan Nelson makes this oh sew simple! Then, it is all about color placement to create the secondary pattern. What a fun way to use her Creative Grids® Folded Corner Clipper XL. The pattern includes fabric requirements and cutting instructions for two sizes.
5 Stack by Leigh Headington is a charming beginner quilt. Sewing strips together and then sub-cutting makes this quilt fun and easy project. These units are then alternated with large rectangles, the perfect place to show off your favorite fabrics.
Create the center star points with the Creative Grids® Ultimate Flying Geese Tool or insert your favorite four-inch block. Then add two rounds of logs with the Log Cabin Trim Tool. The corner triangles are trimmed evenly thanks to the diagonal line that is printed on the Folded Corner Clipped XL. Each round is trimmed after the oversized triangles are added so they are perfect every time!
Don’t you love the secondary block design that is created when corner posts are added to the sashings? What a great way to learn new techniques with your favorite rulers.

Ever want to teach a sampler quilt class where your students can choose from 16 different 12-inch blocks? The book includes 16 block patterns that feature the Creative Grids® Kitty Cornered Tool and the Ultimate Flying Geese Tool – teaching opportunities!
There are also suggestions for how to incorporate other CGR rulers into your designs and layouts.
The Build a Quilt Workbook also contains 10 layouts in multiple sizes. Simply choose your favorite 12″ finished block, or a variety of blocks, and insert them into the quilt design layouts found in this workbook.
Teach it as a class and every quilt will look totally different! What a way to inspire your students to move onto their next project!
She also loves to play with Creative Grids® tools by other designers. All of these designs were inspired when she was testing and playing with other tools:
Both of these Cut Loose Press™ quilts were made with the Creative Grids® Folded Corner Clipper – one of our most versatile tools!
These Cut Loose Press™ patterns feature the Creative Grids® Seam Guide – the fastest way to mark half-square triangles:
And, this table topper and table runner feature the Creative Grids® Diamond Mini by Krista Moser.
For those of you who love handwork, she also created this hexie pillow to highlight a favorite photo or block.
Deb is using this quarantine time to her best advantage – designing, creating, and playing in her studio! I can’t wait to see what she comes up with next!
Peppermint Twist (#CLPSCH002) is a darling table runner by Sheila Christensen that features the Creative Grids® Half Sixty ruler. Since you cut a multitude of shapes to create the candies, it is a great choice for a class!
Hearts on the Half Square (#CLPPHA015) was designed by yours truly so I am a little prejudice! It is made with 80 layer cakes. My family calls this the wedding quilt because I have made so many of them for wedding gifts. The hearts are the perfect size for signatures and messages for the honored couple. At 75 x 91 inches, it is the perfect size for cuddling. It also works great as a memory quilt for any event: graduations, anniversaries, babies…
Since this quilt is made with half-square triangles created from ten-inch squares, I used the 15-inch Creative Grids® Seam Guide Tool (#CGRSMN15) to mark the sewing lines. It is specifically designed to span the diagonal of a 10″ square!
Putting the top together is a breeze when all of the half-square triangles are trimmed to the exact same size!
Charmed Hearts (#CLPPHA014) is made with 80 charm squares pieced into offset four-patches. Or, if you make Hearts on the Half-Square – and carefully trim the excess fabric out behind the hearts, you get a twofer!
Since this is made with five inch squares, the 2 1/2″ width of the I love my Quilting Friends ruler (#CGRQF26 )works great to cut the four-patches.
If you like to do handwork, the hearts for both quilts can be appliqued. The Gypsy Quilter Freezer Paper (#TGQFP811H) is recommended. It comes in 8 1/2″ x 11″ sheets so you can trace one page of hearts and run it through a home printer to save tracing time.
But, if you prefer machine embroidery, use Print-N-Fuse (#PNF25). It is also available in 8 1/2″ x 11″ sheets so the hearts can be copied on a home printer. Follow the package instructions to fuse the stabilizer on the back and fuse in place.
Deb Heatherly designed this Hexagon Pillow (#CLPDHE039 )to showcase a favorite print or photo transfer. What a cute, easy project – and a great gift.
A friend of Deb’s made this Hogwarts version – I have some grandchildren who would love this version!
Since Cut Loose Press™ patterns are printed on demand, they are always in stock!

The newest Creative Grids® tool, Kitty Cornered, developed by Deb Heatherly is simply brilliant! It is one of those blocks that I always paper-pieced in the past because I just couldn’t sew those odd angles accurately. Well, not anymore!
Make eleven different sizes of the Kitty Cornered block – two at a time! Cut the odd angles with the tool, then trim them down to size after sewing. Fast, easy and accurate! Make two Kitty Cornered blocks at one time – the printed cutting chart is right on the tool! Create eleven sizes from 1 to 6 inches – and every half inch in between. The ruler comes with fully illustrated step by step instructions or watch the YouTube video to see a demonstration.
And, of course, there are sooo many companions. Daddy’s Ties is a Cut Loose Press™ pattern and is the perfect choice for a memory quilt. I am making this one with a friend who lost her husband a few years ago. We are using his ties – and oxford cloth shirts for the background squares. What an heirloom!
Combining four of the blocks – and sewing them together like a nine-patch creates this stunning quilt – Kitty Cornered Chained. Don’t you love the larger units as accents in the middle border?
Evergreen Runner is a fast, easy project combining half-square triangles and Kitty Cornered blocks.
By reversing the lights and darks in the block, a whole new design is created in Happy N Blessed.
Nostalgia combined Kitty Cornered blocks with three inch log cabins – created with the four inch log cabin trim tool.
Need a patriotic table runner this summer? Liberty Runner is just the ticket and you can finish it in an afternoon!
I love this Maple Leaf table runner that is cut from 10 – 10″ squares so it is easy to kit for classes! I cut kits for this yesterday and am using a gray background – can’t wait to start sewing!
Aptitude is a full pattern that includes instructions for a lap as well as a queen sized quilt. This pattern uses the Creative Grids® CGRDH2 Strippy Stars Tool and the CGRDH5 Kitty Cornered Tool. Fabric selection is easy! Just choose a background and two additional contrasting colors.
Catagonia also features lap and queen sizes and combines the Cat’s Cradle tool by Deb with the Kitty Cornered tool. The pattern calls for a variety of fabrics in the cat’s cradle units so pull out your scraps!
Sassafras combines the Ultimate Flying Geese tool with the Kitty Cornered Tool for maximum effect. With just three colors, it is oh so simple to choose fabrics.
Pick out 9 Fat Quarters and a background fabric, and use the Creative Grids® CGRDH5 Kitty Cornered tool to make this fun 55″ x 70″ quilt designed by Christine Van Buskirk. Don’t you love the dark background???
Flurry is a 64″ x 80″ Fat Quarter friendly quilt is stunning in blues. Using CGRFCC (6″ Folded Corner Clipper) is also featured in the instructions as an optional tool for the diamond in a square assembly.
The tool and Cut Loose Press™ patterns are in stock. The full-sized patterns are due in any day so place your orders now!
