A Little Fabric History and Some Amazing Quilts

True Blue Quilts by Annette Plog is the type of book that every quilter loves. There are fifteen quilt patterns all based on historic blue quilts. But along the way, she explains the history of blues – from the first indigo fabrics to the development of synthetic dyes in the late 1800’s.

Quilter’s Book Club

There are several new books which have just hit the shelves or that will be arriving soon that I can’t wait to get my hands on. For instance, who doesn’t love anything by Kathy Schmitz? Her new book of stitching designs is simply charming and celebrates my favorite time of year.

Carol Hopkins and Linda Koenig have joined forces to create 182 four x five-inch blocks – all you need to create an heirloom quality quilt with style. These rectangular blocks use a variety of techniques and would be a great class for those Dear Jane fans. Why not invite friends on this journey? They have included tips to help you set up your own block exchange or club. This book has 208 pages – a rarety these days – so be prepared to be inspired!

And then there is this coffee table book that is soon to be released by Martingale. American Quilt Treasures includes 65 stunning quilts from the permanent collection of the International Quilt Study Center & Museum.  These historic quilts are simply breathtaking. This is scheduled for a Fall release so it would be the perfect holiday gift!

Dear Jane – In Wool

For those of you who are not familiar with the Jane A. Stickle quilt, it was originally made during the Civil War – 1863 and is signed by the maker.  Not only is it signed, she also stated that the quilt contains 5,602 pieces!  The center is pieced from 169 – four and a half inch finished blocks.  The border is created from 56 pieced triangles for a total of 225 different blocks.

Brenda Papadakis has drawn the blocks and included them all in her Dear Jane book – a quilt which is on the bucket list for many experienced quilters!  Now, Jackie Apessos of Lake View Primitives is creating beautiful kits out of hand-dyed wool.  There are individual kits for each row, the borders, corners, and even a completer kit.  Each kit includes an ample supply of wool and floss needed to complete the blocks or triangles.

World War II Quilts

We owe an incredible part of our quilting history to Sue Reich.  I have her first book – World War II Quilts.  It is sooo well done!  She shares the quilts and stories of the quilts that represent a generation.  Many of these quilts are just surfacing.  As Sue says, when they returned from the war, these quilts were placed in cedar chests – and in many cases forgotten.  Thanks to Sue, they are now receiving center stage.

In Sue’s own words:

“Since this book was released, Many American women made warm and attractive quilts to honor and benefit US soldiers during the period 1940-1945, either as outright gifts or as raffle items to raise money for the war effort. This book reflects extensive original research of newspaper and magazine articles of the era, and authenticates the patterns and designs available to quilt makers, anchoring the quilts historically in time. Color photos and descriptive text identify many colorful and patriotic quilts made for donation to the Red Cross and organizations such as Bundles for Britain. When possible, original patterns and designs that inspired the quilts are included. The quilts can now be interpreted from factual and objective perspectives, enhancing their historic and emotional importance.”

This book is due out in May.  What a great gift!

For the Book Nerd in Your Life

There are several pics of “book” quilts showing up on Facebook.  And when I say books – take that literally!  For that book lover in your life, why not make them a throw to cuddle under while they read?

This quilt is a simple paper-pieced pattern so everyone will be successful.  Make a nice sized throw or add “books” to create a bed-sized quilt.  Wouldn’t this be great in Tim Holtz fabric?  It is designed to be fat quarter friendly.

I love this quilt because it gives you the perfect opportunity to personalize it.  Write the titles of their favorite books on the binding. Or, write a favorite quote on the cover.  What a great gift for a favorite teacher.  Change up the fabrics to make a perfect masculine version!

Mini Quilts are Hot Part Two

Several of your favorite designers:  Pat Sloan, Carrie Nelson, Brigitte Heitland, Camille Roskelley, Me and My Sister Designs, Sherri McConnell, Sandy Gervais, Edyta Sitar, Lynne Hagmeier, Vanessa Christenson, Anne Sutton, Laurie Simpson, Jen Kingwell, Lisa Bongean, and Betsy Chutchian. contributed to this top-selling book:  Mini Marvels.  All of these designers have such a recognizable style that it is fun to guess who made each quilt – no peeking!

Once again, the photography showcases these beauties to their best advantage – and makes you want to start cutting up that stash immediately!

Don’t forget!  I know I mentioned this in Part One, but it bares repeating! If you are hanging them on a wall, you may want to consider using Soft and Stable for batting.  They will hang perfectly flat and add that professional touch!  It comes in several packaging options: Project Packs which include four 13 1/2 x 18 1/2 inch pieces (originally meant for place mats but perfect for minis), 1/2 yard cuts; 1 yard cuts; etc.  Why not display these packaged options next to a display of minis???

Creative Grids® has several rulers that may help you along your miniature journey.  They have put together a booklet entitled “Love Mini’s” which shows a wide variety of tools available to create small units. Help your customers find the right tool for their mini projects!   There is also a tri-fold available to help your customers keep track of the Creative Grids® products they already have… or want! Miss Rosie’s Farmhouse Favorites

I love everything by Carrie Nelson.  She is one of the queens of scrap quilts.  I told you about this book a few weeks ago – sight unseen – but now I have photos.  My personal rule of thumb?  If I see four quilts in a book that I want to make, it is worth it – and in this case, I want to make them ALL!  The book includes a collection of twelve of her favorite patterns.

Start with the cover quilt!  What a great setting for nine-patches!

Combining nine patches and churn dashes?  And houses and flying geese trees?  Pure Genius!
