Applique in All its Glory

Organic Applique by Kathy Doughty just blew me away. I love to applique but her designs are breathtaking!

Just look at the cover quilt. She has combined a HUGE elongated courthouse steps block with quirky appliques in stunning colors to create a true masterpiece! And the photography is inspired! Don’t you love the paper umbrellas hanging from the ceiling?

Even her more traditional pattern – a vase of flowers – takes on a whole new look with her choice of colors and borders.

Just look at the variety of projects! Paper-piecing, applique, Broderie Perse – Kathy walks you through every technique!

A Unicorn Named Nola…

Two new patterns by Laura Heine are due to arrive this month and are sure to be as popular as her other designs.

Nola measures 35 x 47 inches – the perfect size for the center of a baby quilt or the focus of a nursery. But this whimsical unicorn will take center stage wherever she is placed!

Song Bird measures 30 inches square and is stunning on a dark background. I wonder how it would look on a light background??? Maybe you should make both???

Wool in all its Beauty

Rebekah Smith has designed two wool mats that can add a spark of color to any decor. Folk Hearts has two options – both so charming you will want to make both!

This table runner is stunning in Fall colors but would be gorgeous in Spring colors as well. The shape adds that awe factor and highlights the design as well.

Summer is beginning and is the perfect time for a bit of handwork. Wool is the perfect choice for a take along project!

Dream Bigger!

Who doesn’t love the Dream Big panels by Hoffman? They are stand alone gorgeous and make a stunning statement.

But how do you quilt them? Hancy has come up with a solution! They have template sets to get you started with design options so you can still add your own creativity.

Cindi McCracken uses them in a different way – she cuts them up and makes stunning quilts. Two of her latest creations will be arriving soon.

JoAnn Hoffman cuts them up for appliques in this spectacular bed runner!

Glow in the Dark

I want to make sure I get this right so in the words of Mettler:

POLY GLOW is a phosphorescent, washable embroidery thread that stores UV and artificial light, making embroideries and seams glow in the dark. The thread is extremely well-suited for extraordinary effects on sports, kids, leisure wear, bags and satchels as well as for embroidering logos and letterings. T

It is a 40 weight thread and comes on 109 yard spools for around $6.00. A 70 or 80 needle is recommended. It is due to arrive any day.

Yoko Saito’s Imaginary Garden

I love to applique and a quilt like this has been on my bucket list for a long time.

This quilt is a true work of art, and yes, it is mainly aimed at applique enthusiasts as this wild herbarium is composed of dozens of different flowers, cut from a subtle palette of grey and taupes, appliqued directly on a background.

The pattern “Imaginary Garden” was a huge success when it was first published as a three-part series in Quiltmania magazine. As a result of its popularity, it is now available in booklet form!

Check out the detail! The little touches of embroidery enhance every flower.

Wash Out Applique Paper

This applique paper by Helen Stubbins of Hugs’ n Kisses is a great demo product!

This fusible paper comes in 8 1/2 x 11 inch sheets and can be run through a printer. Fuse it to the wrong side of the fabric; cut the fabric 1/4 inch away and turn. When the project is washed, the paper dissolves and leaves a thin, pliant film.

The best part? This paper is also available in shapes that are already cut to the most popular sizes….

including the shapes required for the Lucy Boston quilt.

With the emergence of the popularity of six-inch blocks, this is a great series of classes. Do six blocks a month and your entire year is planned out! Start the applique border and center in the beginning and everything should be done by the time the blocks are completed!
